Project IDA is a global network of broadband and very long period seismometers operated by the Cecil H. and Ida M. Green Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego. IDA stations and similarly-equipped stations operated by the US Geological Survey comprise the IRIS Global Seismic Network, which is supported by funding from the US National Science Foundation.

On Sunday, December 26th, 2004 at 12:58 AM (GMT) we recorded a quake (preliminary Mw 9.0) located near the west coast of Sumatra.

If you felt the quake, the USGS would like to know. Please add to the USGS "Did you feel it?" page.

Initial source parameters for the recent event are shown below. The epicentral distance (distance separating the epicenter and the closest station that reports in real time) for station COCO of the IDA network is 1718 km (15.43 degrees).

Location Maps

This map shows the mainshock (red star) and any associated aftershocks (orange stars). IDA network stations are yellow triangles.

This map shows the three nearest stations in the IRIS/IDA Global Seismic Network (GSN) (yellow triangles) to the epicenter (red star). Placing the cursor over each station pops up a box that shows the station name. Clicking the station shows the waveforms recorded at that station.
