PALK operational status:

2022.09.11

IDA engineers are onsite and replaced the STS-6 seismometer at 2022254-04:00 (9/11/2022). They have also installed a RPM, and replaced the backup batteries.

2022.08.29

The station operators visited the station and restored power to the station.  IDA engineers are planning on visiting the station next month to replace the faulty STS-6 and install new weather station, remote power monitor (RPM), cell system, and replace the backup batteries.

2022.04.05

There are prolonged daily power outages at the station and all of Sri Lanka.  This is causing long intermittent data gaps at the station and is presenting challenges for the station operator to be able to visit the station.  IDA engineers are working on lowering the power consumption at the station to try to mitigate the effects of these outages.  The station may need to be powered down when the station operator visits the station until equipment can be shipped to resolve the power issues.

Data from the STS-6 became bit-noise on 2021,350 (December 16).

The station was down from about 2021.06.09 to 2021.06.11 due to a power surge at the station.  The station operators restored power by replacing fuses for the AC Mains.

The station is back online after the station operator visited the station and reset the circuit breaker, restoring power to the station.

2021.01.31

The station is down due to damages caused by a lightning strike.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator to assess and repair damages.

2020.10.21

Due to a couple recent power outages, the station operator visited the station and performed some power system tests.  There is a suspected bad cell and/or other issues with the backup battery system.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator to replace the faulty backup batteries.

The station operator and contractor visited the station and upgraded the power system, improving grounding and surge protection at the station.

2020.05.19

The station is experiencing power issues since May 9.  Lightning was tripping the circuit breakers at the station from May 9 to May 16.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator and a contractor who upgraded the CTBTO power system to resolve these issues.  They have found a voltage difference between the 240V AC lines, which may be solved by installing a voltage stabilizer and isolation transformer.

The North-South channels from the STS-6 are showing off significant offsets since day 2020,058.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator and manufacturer to diagnose the issue with this sensor.

The station is back online after the station operator visited the station and restored AC power.

The station is down due to grounding problems causing power interruptions at the station.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator to resolve these issues.

The station operator visited the station and replaced a faulty Q330 digitizer, a station computer, and re-installed the paroscientific barometer.

IDA engineers are at the station to upgrade the power system, replace the KS54000 seismometer with an STS-6 seismometer, and install a new Episensor.

2018.12.03

The station is up as of day 335(Dec. 1) after the station operator replaced the faulty digitizer and the surge arrestors and switch in the aux box.

After further testing at the station, it has been determined that the palk10 digitizer has failed.  IDA engineers have prepared a replacement and are arranging shipment to the station.

The station is down as of day 2018,298-16:03 due to communication problems between the digitizers and the station computers.  The palk10 digitizer may have been damaged by lightning near the station.    IDA engineers are working with the station operator to resolve this issue.

The station is back online after the station operator replaced the router and restored communications between the digitizers and station computers.

The station is down as of day 155-05:18 (June 4) due to communication problems between the digitizers and station computers.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator to resolve this issue.

2018.02.02

The station was down from day 2018,024-09:01 to 2018,032-08:33 due to power issues.  The station operator visited the station and restored power by temporarily connecting cables to bypass the Circuit breaker box to apply Mains power. A replacement Circuit breaker box will be sent to the station.

2017.11.30

The Episensor strong motion sensor channels are non-seismic starting day 2017,321-08:55.  The palk-00 digitizer is not responding to calibration commands.

2017.10.19

The station is back up after the station operator replaced a surge suppressor and faulty digitizer.  Data acquisition was restored on day 291-11:15 (Oct. 18).

2017.09.13

The station is down as of day 246-08:00 (Sept. 3) due to a power surge and subsequent power outage.  It appears the AC circuit breaker is blown.

2017.03.22

The palk00 digitizer is not acquiring data since day 2017,066-08:42.  The palk10 digitizer is still working and the GPSfclock configuration has been changed for this digitizer. IDA engineers are investigating the palk00 digitizer issue.

An IDA engineer visited the station and replaced a faulty episensor strong motion sensor and the station computers.

2015.08.30

The station operator replaced the palk-00 digitizer and restored all channels from the KS54000 seismometer on day 2015,242-0457 (Aug.30).

2015.05.05

The palk-00 digitizer is not acquiring data since day 2015,125-10:15.  IDA engineers are working with the station operator to resolve this issue.

2014.07.07

IDA station PALK is back up as of day 2014,185 after an IDA engineer visited the station and replaced both digitizers, and the Trillium 120PH seismometer.

2014.05.22

PALK is back online as of day 2014,140-11:11.  All channels from the KS54000 seismometer are seismic.  Data from the Trillium 120PH is still non-seismic. There are problems with the GPS clock.

2014.05.02

The station is down as of day 2014,120-16:21 due to damage to the digitizer, GPS, and Trillium 120PH seismometer caused by lightning. Replacement equipment is currently being prepared for shipment to the station.

The station operator moved the KS54000 seismometer to the PALK-10 digitizer on day 2014,118-16:09.

The station operator replaced the faulty Q330 digitizer and gapping ceased day 2014,080-05:46.

A faulty Q330 digitizer is causing excessive gapping on the BH*-00,LH*-00 channels.  A replacement digitizer will be shipped to the station.

2013.12.03

IDA engineers replaced the CMG-3T with a Trillium 120PH seismometer, and repaired the KS-54000 seismometer electronics.

The KS-54000 is not functioning properly due to faulty wiring to the sensor.

All channels from the KS-54000 seismometer have been restored after the station operator replaced the seismometer interface box, and fixed a cable to the KS-54000. The station operator reports that the cables to the sensor should be replaced.

2012.11.19

The station operator visited the site and power cycled the KS-54000 seismometer. The power supply in the sensor interface box has failed, and a replacement SIB is being prepared to ship to the station.

2012.11.12

All channels from the KS-54000 seismometer became non-seismic on day 2012,317-17:01 following a sharp step on all components.

2011.10.20

The power problems were resolved as of day 2011,293, after the station operator reconfigured the connection to the replacement Newmar power supply. Transient spiking due to the previous outages have ceased.

The station operator visited the station and checked the status of the power system. The noise for the KS54000 persists. IDA engineers are preparing to ship a replacement Newmar power supply.

The station operator visited the station and checked the battery breaker switch, fuses, and connections on the power supply. IDA engineers are still working with the station operator to resolve the power problems.

2011.05.16

The station continues to have power problems. The seismometers are losing power intermittently and the digitizers are rebooting, while the ISP remains unaffected. The station operator has been requested to visit the station to investigate.

The station is back online as of day 2011,125-16:59 after the station operator replaced the Newmar Power Supply shipped from UCSD. There is high background noise for the KS54000 seismometer for reasons yet to be determined.

IDA engineers are preparing to ship a new Newmar Power Supply to the station.

The station remains down due to suspected power problems. IDA engineers are currently working with the station operator to resolve the problem.

The station is down as of day 2011,094-11:37 due to communication problems between the DAS and ISP that are yet to be determined.

2010.08.10

The BB110 channels from the CMG-3T seismometer are non-seismic as of day 2010,211 for reasons yet to be determined. All channels from the palk00 digitizer were not being acquired from day 2010,218-05:27 to 2010,221-18:04 due to problems with the digitizer. Data acquisition for these channels resumed after the station operator replaced the palk00 Q330 digitizer.

2009.12.14

An IDA engineer visited the station and upgraded it to a Quanterra Q330HR system. Upon successful completion of the upgrade a storm caused a power outage. An AC mains circuit breaker had been damaged, and the engineer bypassed it to restore power. A new AC mains circuit breaker is being prepared to ship to the station.

An IDA engineer visited the station to upgrade the station computer, reconfigure the telemetry link to the station, and install an iboot network power switch.

2007.12.08

An IDA engineer visited the station and replaced the CMG-3T sensor, and installed an episensor, and an RT-593 circuit board in the DAS. Both the vertical and horizontal channels from the KS-54000 and CMG-3T sensors have been restored.

The station operator removed a faulty RT-303 board for the vertical channels from the KS-54000 seismometer. This resolved a problem of excessive gapping of all channel data caused by the faulty circuit board.

2005.10.31

The station is up after an IDA engineer restored power to the station (10/31). The horizontal channels from the CMG3-T seismometer and FBA-23 accelerometer remain out due to bad sensors.

The station is down due to a power problem day 255-07:56 (Sept.12).

Station is back up after station operator replaced XCOM board in the DAS. Vertical and horizontal channels from the Guralp CMG3-T seismometer and FBA-23 accelerometer are out for reasons yet to be determined.

An IDA engineer visited the station to perform routine maintenance tasks. These included: 1. Install a new solar power system. Mains power to the station has proven unreliable and a source of long period noise. It is hoped the new solar array will stabilize the station’s performance. 2. The air conditioner had failed and was taken to a dealership for repair. 3. Two failed RT303 cards in the DAS were replaced.
