Sensors are located in an inactive silver mine. The STS-1 seismometers are situated in a seismic vault in the mine approximately 500 meters horizontally into the mountain, about 160 meters below the surface. The tunnels were excavated in granite. The granite is overlain by a sedimentary sequence consisting primarily of Triassic red sandstone from 0-100 meters depth.
